Historical Books Joshua Chapter 10

HISTORICAL BOOKS

JOSHUA

CHAPTER

10

1. When King  Adoni-zedek of Jerusalem heard how Joshua had taken Ai, and had utterly destroyed it, doing to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king, and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were among them, 2. he became greatly frightened, because Gibeon was a large city, like one of the royal cities, and was larger than Ai, and all its men were warriors.

(Historical Books Chapter 10 verses 1 to 2)

Oh God when the news of a pending threat comes close to home we become greatly concerned and even worried, however the great news of Your 'Second Coming' seems not to be an issue for the people of our times, for many of us are living a life as if the end will never come and judgement will never be passed on them. I pray that we become concerned about our spiritual life and the related consequences as much as we are of politics, the price of oil per bucket, the rise and fall of the value of the Euro, the terrorist group ISIS and global warming among other issues. Amen

3. So King Adoni-zedek of Jerusalem sent a message to King Hoham of Hebron, to King Piram of Jarmuth, to King Japhia of Lachish, and to King Debir of Eglon, saying, 4. "Come up and help me, and let us attack Gibeon; for it has made peace with Joshua and with the Israelites."

(Historical Books Joshua Chapter 10 verses 3 to 4)

Due to the fact that Gibeon had made peace with Joshua and the Israelites they ended up in trouble with the people of the neighbouring countries. This can easily happen to us due to the fact that we chose the road of peace instead of that of war and strife. however it is still better to side with God than with the forces of evil, even if this means ending up against the opposing party, for God is our fortress against the forces of evil. Moreover it is better to face oppression to for doing good than experience condemnation for doing evil.

5. Then the five kings of the Amorites-the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon-gathered their forces, and went up with all their armies and camped against Gibeon,  and made war aginst it.

(Historical Books Joshua Chapter 10 verse 5)

Oh God my Father in the case of Gibeon the odds were all against them. The situation was five against one. However in truth You had not abandoned Gibeon. Even though everything seems to be going on against us maybe the death of a husband and then another relative in a short time span, the victory is still Yours my God. You have the final say over all the situations of our life. All is under Your control and only You are aware of the reasons that permit particular events such as bombs, wars terminal illness to take place. As humans, we are to accept all that happens as being part of Your plan for our salvation even though we may not understand Your reasons. Amen

Oh God I would like to place before You in a spirit of prayer a colleague of mine who has recently become a widow, weeks after her pet dog or bitch also died, and now her father has been diagnosed with a terminal illness. I pray that You give consolation to such people so that they can be able to bear all this emotional stress and accept it as being part of Your will for them, even though this is very painful for us humans to accept and or understand.

6. And the Gibeonites sent to Joshua at the camp in Gilgal, saying, "Do not abandon your servants; come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us; for all the kings of the Amorites who live in the hill country are gathered against us."

(Historical Books Joshua Chapter 10 verse 6)

Oh God it seems that when we become committed to doing good we end up instantly against those who are not in favour of good. As in the case of Joshua we end up having to lend a hand and sharing in other's people's tribulations by becoming involved in the given situation. At time oh God we end up fighting other people's wars as in the case of Joshua because we love and care for such people who are oppressed or in trouble. Ideally we are to empower the weak party so that they could be able to solve their own problems, however their comes a time when a helping hand is needed and with the power of God with whom we are to be always united He will show us a peaceful way to solve our issues even if we have more than one opponent against us as in the case of the people of Gibeon who had five kings against them.

7. So Joshua went up from Gilgal, he and all the fighting force with him, all the mighty warriors. 8. The LORD said to Joshua, "Do not fear them, for I have handed them over to you; not one of them shall stand before you."

(Historical Books Joshua Chapter 10 verses 7 to 8)

Oh God my, Father indeed You are an awesome God, who can transform our failures or tribulations into outstanding victories. Joshua was facing five kings and their armies, however You told him that You had already given him victory over them. Oh God You will give us victory over our addictions, compulsions and any other from of enemy as long as we stand bold with the firm belief that You are truly with us and will help us overcome both our selves and the given situation.

Be bold be strong

9. So Joshua came upon them suddenly, having marched up all night from Gilgal. 10.  And the LORD threw them into a panic before Israel, who inflicted a great slaughter on them at Gibeon, chased them by the way of the ascent of Beth-horon, and struck them down as far as Azekah and Makeddah. 11. As they fled before Israel, while they were going down the slope of Beth-Horon, the LORD threw down huge stones from heaven on them as far as Azekah, and they died; there were who died because of the hailstones than the Israelites killed with the sword.

(Historical Books Joshua Chapter 10 verses 9 to 11)

Oh God when we place our total trust in You we see miracles take place. Regardless of how strong the opposition with You on our side even the greatest enemy can be overcome. Amen.

12. On the day when the LORD gave the Amorites over to the Israelites, Joshua spoke to the LORD; and he said in the sight of Israel, "Sun, stand still at Gibeon, and Moon, in the valley of Aijalon."13. And the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, until the nation took vengeance on their enemies. Is this not written in the Book of Jashar? The sun stopped in midheaven, and did not hurry to set for about a whole day.

(Historical Books Joshua Chapter 10 verses 12 to 13)

Oh God Almighty you are the Master creator the sole authority over all created things even the heavens and all that exists in it. In You every thing find its existence even our own selves, and all is under Your control. You are able to reverse the course of nature by making the sun slow down and the moon stop in its rotation, something that is humanly non-imaginable according to science. However You are to superior to both the natural and the super natural. In order to favour Joshua You made such an even possible. These verses are very empowering. If You stopped the course of nature on Joshua's request, You are able to stop the spread of cancer in people if they ask You to do so. You never refuse our prayers. You are able to reverse the consequences of this terminal illness and even of others. You are the God of the supernatural which is over and above the natural order. However we need to believe as in the case of Joshua in order to enable the power of God to be released. Amen.

14. There has been no day like it before or since, when the LORD heeded a human voice; for the LORD fought for Israel. 15. Then Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.

(Historical Books Joshua Chapter 10 verses 14 to 15)

Oh God indeed You are an awesome God and Your Name is always worthy to be praised, for in some way or another You always answer our prayers when offered in a spirit of faith that You truly listen to our prayers. When we pray in faith and not in negative desperation You are able to work wonders and reverse even the forces of nature in our favour as we have witnessed. Amen. Therefore let us place our faith totally in Him and we will never be forsaken Amen.

16. Meanwhile, these five kings fled and hid themselves in the cave at Makkedah. 17. And it was told Joshua, "The five kings have been found, hidden in the cave at Makeddah."

(Historical Books Joshua Chapter 10 verses 16 to 17)

Oh God when we commit sins we feel unworthy of appearing before You. Therefore we end up going in hiding to seek refuge in our material world and all our belongings. However oh God You do not take pleasure in seeing us deep in our caves but want us to be freed from ourselves. You are ready to forgive us instead of condemning us or barricading us in the cave until we die.

18. Joshua said, "Roll large stones against the mouth of the cave, and set men by it to guard them; 19. but do not stay there yourselves; pursue your enemies and attack them from the rear. Do not let them enter their towns, for the LORD your God has given them into your hand."

(Historical Books Joshua Chapter 10 verses 18 to 19)

Oh God my Father it could be that we are not living as whole persons, because due to our hurts we have barricaded ourselves in a cave, or feel barricaded by means of our sins. We may also feel that we are being attacked from our weakest points and pursued again and again. I pray for us all oh God my Father so that we remain firm in our faith even though we may be facing hard times. Amen.

20. When Joshua and the Israelites had finished inflicting a very great slaughter on them, until they were wiped out, and when the survivors had entered into the fortified towns, 21. all the people returned safe to Joshua in the camp at Makkedah; no one dared to speak against any of the Israelites.

(Historical Books Joshua Chapter 10 verses 20 to 21)

Oh God in Your presence when witnessing Your interventions we are truly left without

22. Then Joshua said, "Open the mouth of the cave, and bring those five kings out to me from the cave."

(Historical Books Joshua Chapter 10 verse 22)

Ou God my Father as Your sons and daughters You also wish us to come out of our caves. Life may have treated us hard and we may have retreated into our cave in order to protect ourselves from becoming hurt by our enemies. God is telling us to place our trust in Him and He will be our security for life. he wants us to remove all the existing blockages in order for us to have a healthy relationship with him Amen.

23. They did so, and brought the five kings out to him from the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon. 24. When they brought the kings out to Joshua, Joshua summoned all the Israelites, and said to the chiefs of the warriors who had gone with him, "Come near, put your feet on the necks of these kings." Then they came near and put their feet on their necks. 25. And Joshua said to them, "Do not be afraid or dismayed: be strong and courageous; for thus the LORD will do to all the enemies against whom you fight,"

(Historical Books Joshua Chapter 10 verses 23 to 25)

Oh God my Father You wish us to be dominant over our problems and over our compulsions, we are the masters and not the slaves who stay on compulsion under the heels of their masters or mistresses.  You walked over the waves of tribulation and will also assist me oh God in my issues and deliver me from them Amen.

26. Afterward Joshua struck them down and put them to death, and he hung them on five trees. And they hung on the trees until evening. 27. At sunset Joshua commanded, and they took them down from the trees and threw them into the cave where they had hidden themselves; they set large stones against the mouth of the cave, which remain to this very day.

(Historical Books Joshua Chapter 10 verses 26 to 27)

Oh God my Father, on reflecting the five kings that Joshua hung on the trees, were the five most deadliest sins. As in the case of the Tablets containing the Ten Commandments, each of the five kings represents our most challenging sins that as humans we are bound to commit at some point or other, however You not only make us aware of our sins, but You give us the will and energy to cut down our enemies, place them in their grave and roll a huge stone at the entrance of the grave forever. Amen. Thank You God my Father.

28. Joshua took Makkedah on that day, and struck it and its king with the edge of the sword; he utterly destroyed every person in it; he left no one remaining. And he did to the king of Makkeddah as he had done to the king of Jericho. 29. Then Joshua passed on from Makkedah, and all Israel with him, to Libnah, and fought against Libnah. 30. The LORD gave it also and its king into the hand of Israel' and he struck it with the edge of the sword, and every person in it; he left no one remaining in it; and he did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho. 31. Next Joshua passed on from Libnah, and all Israel with him, to Lachish, and laid siege to it, and assaulted it. 32. The LORD gave Lachish into the hand of Israel, and he took it on the second day, and struck it with the edge of the sword, and every person in it as he had done to Libnah.

(Historical Books Chapter 10 verses 28 to 32)

Oh God gradually the unfolding of Your plan for the conquest of the Promised Land continued to unfold. Even during the course of our live it continues to do so, one event leading to another until we are ready to completely occupy our promised land which can be anything from a project, or career to the salvation of our souls and a place in Your presence in heaven Amen

33. Then King Horam of Gezer came up to help Lachish; and Joshua struck him and his people, leaving him no survivors. 34. From Lachish Joshua passed on with all Israel to Eglon; and they laid siege to it, and assaulted it; 35. and they took it that day, and struck it with the edge of the sword; and every person in it he utterly destroyed that day, as he had done to Lachish. 36. Then Joshua went up with all Israel from Eglon to Hebron; they assaulted it, 37. and took it, and struck it with the edge of the sword, and its king and its towns and every person in it; he left no one remaining, just as he had done to Eglon and utterly destroyed it with every person in it. 38. Then Joshua, with all Israel, turned back to Debir and assaulted it, 39, and he took it with its king and all its towns; they struck them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed every person in it; he left no one remaining; just as he had done to Hebron, and, as he had done to Hebron, and as he had done to Libnah and its king, so he did to Debir and its king.

(Historical Books Chapter 10 verses 33 to 39)

Oh God my Father gradually Your plan for our salvation unfolds until it is fully implemented. However as, in the case of Joshua and the people it is Israel, for some time You  tell us go return back to previous situations and re-experience them with the attitude of a winner and finish the unfinished business that we had left behind us during our first encounter. So if you ever find yourself returning back to a situation that you thought was over and done with do not worry for this is an action replay as a winner. It may be that twe may still need to grow in this particular area thus You my, Father have given us a second chance to sit for the test and pass it with flying colours. Amen.

40. So Joshua defeated the whole land, the hill country and the Negeb and the lowland and the slopes, and all their kings; he left no one remaining, but utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the LORD God of Israel commanded. 41. And Joshua defeated them from Kadesh-barnea to Gaza, and all the country of Goshen, as far as Gibeon. 42. Joshua took all these kings and their lands at one time, because the LORD God of Israel fought for Israel. 43. Then Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.

(Historical Books Joshua Chapter 10 verses 40 to 43)

Oh God my Father I thank You greatly for keeping Your promise with Your people throughout the ages. Ever since You made the first promise to Abraham You never stopped working until the conquest was finally fulfilled. Thank You for remaining faithful and loyal to Your promise. I pray that I also remain faithful in my relationship with You forever Amen.

Oh God my Father I would like to end this chapter with the following prayer.

Oh God until You made possible the conquest of the promised land as had been promised ever since the time of Abrahm those who walked in your ways faced many times of tribulations, bondage in Egypt and other conflicts, at times not all remained faithful to You, however even though at times we are disobedient and rebellious, You never gave up on Your people and even on us. Gradually You show us the paths we have to take and lead us to our promised land Amen. You are the Master Navigator of my life. I thank You for leading me from one job to another and for all the experiences that You wished me to experience both the positive and even the not so positive Amen.
